How to Spend a Day at Lookout Mountain
Lookout Mountain is a stunning mountain ridge that rises roughly 2,000 feet above sea level and overlooks the scenic city of Chattanooga. For decades, this iconic destination has lured visitors to its three main attractions: Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline Railway. Spanning the border between Tennessee and Georgia, Lookout Mountain offers rich experiences in both states, from natural wonders and scenic trails to historic Civil War sites.
It’s a common misconception to think Lookout Mountain is located in Chattanooga. Two popular attractions are indeed just 15 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, but Lookout Mountain as a whole is the mountain range next to Chattanooga. It’s also a misconception that one of its three major attractions, Rock City, is Lookout Mountain. Rock City is a specific area found within the Lookout Maintain region.
Lookout Mountain covers a large area but it’s the perfect place for a day trip from several popular nearby cities, including Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, and (you guessed it) Chattanooga. All the attractions can easily be seen in a single day if you plan your day strategically. If you’re interested in exploring this southern gem, keep reading, because we’re breaking down exactly how to spend a day at Lookout Mountain.

What is Lookout Mountain?
Lookout Mountain is a mountain ridge renowned for its natural beauty and enchanting landscapes. The area has a whimsical charm that draws visitors to its incredible rock formations and fairy-themed caverns.
The mountain ridge is about 85 miles long and stretches from Chattanooga, Tennessee, through the northwest corner of Georgia, to Gadsden, Alabama. There are attractions and historical sites spread out between both Tennessee and Georgia, but they’re all within a short drive from each other.
Lookout Mountain is particularly famous for three attractions: Rock City, where you can explore enchanting gardens and panoramic vistas; Ruby Falls, where you can delve into the depths of the earth to witness the georgous underground waterfall; and the Incline Railway, one of the world’s steepest passenger railways, offering thrilling rides up the mountain.
Where is Lookout Mountain?
Lookout Mountain spans three states: Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. The most well-known section of Lookout Mountain is near Chattanooga, Tennessee, making it a popular day trip from the city. The mountain stretches southwest from Chattanooga into Georgia and continues down to Gadsden, Alabama.
Chattanooga, Tennessee, is about a 15-minute drive from the mountain’s main attractions, while Nashville, Knoxville, and Atlanta are all about a 2-hour drive away. We visited from Chattanooga, but Lookout Mountain makes for a great day trip from any of these cities. The closest major airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).
💣 Antisocial Tourist Tip — Lookout Mountain is a great stopover when road-tripping to Florida from states such as Michigan and Indiana. Those who live in these states know how popular the drive to Florida is during school breaks, but they may not know that they’re passing such worthwhile attractions!
What to Do at Lookout Mountain
The most obvious things to do in Lookout Mountain are the three main attractions that the area is known for — Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline Railway. We’ll dive into the details of each of these attractions below, so keep reading!
But Lookout Mountain offers much more than its famous three attractions. For nature lovers, the mountain features several hiking trails like Sunset Rock and Bluff Trail. You’ll also find that the Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center offers a peaceful escape with walking trails and native wildlife. And for the adventurous, there’s a popular spot for rock climbing and hang gliding at the Lookout Mountain Flight Park.
Nearby, there’s Point Park, which provides historical insights into the Civil War with well-preserved battlefields and informative exhibits. The area also boasts historical sites such as Cravens House, which played a significant role during the Civil War and is the oldest surviving structure on Lookout Mountain.
Additionally, attractions like the Tennessee Aquarium and the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga offer enriching experiences for all ages. The Walnut Street Bridge is also worth exploring.
Rock City
Rock City is a whimsical and enchanting attraction known for its panoramic views, unique rock formations, vibrant gardens, fairytale-themed caverns, and an iconic viewpoint. In short, it’s a nature trail leading to a popular viewpoint called Lovers Leap.
What to Expect at Rock City
Once you arrive at Rock City, you’ll find a large parking lot across from the entrance. You’ll park and walk over to a plaza to find a restaurant, a fudge shop, souvenir shops, and a ticketing office. Tickets are sold by time slot, so advanced online ticket purchase is encouraged. But you can purchase tickets in person too.
Once you’re past the ticket desk, you’ll immediately see the entrance to the trail. The trail will descend into a dramatic narrow path flanked on each side by steep rock walls. Once it opens up again, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a different world, filled with rock formations, stone bridges, lush greenery, and tranquil water features.
The trail is dotted with fairy-tale-inspired sculptures, there’s a scenic overlook where deer are often spotted, and you’ll find quirky underpasses and secret messages that pay homage to gnomes and fairies. These charming references add a magical touch to the adventure.
At the end of the trail, you’ll find yourself at a fork in the path, with two different routes to Lovers Leap: the Swing-A-Long Bridge and Stone Bridge. Both paths are the same short distance, but one bridge swings, while the other is steady. The swinging bridge can be a bit scary, especially on a windy day, but it is safe.
On the other side of the bridge is Lovers Leap. It’s a striking cliff with a dramatic waterfall cascading from its edge. This is where you’ll find the “See Seven States” viewpoint, where you can see seven different states from a single spot on a clear day. There’s also a cafe, restaurant, and more gift shops here.
The magic isn’t done yet though. The trail continues from here to Fat Man’s Squeeze and the Fairyland Caverns. Fat Man’s Squeeze is a narrow path through two large boulders, and yes, it’s a tight fit for even the smallest of persons. If you’re closterphobic, you can take the trail around this part. Once you’re through the squeeze, or around it, continue following the trail to a picture-perfect view of Lovers Leap, followed by the entrance to Fairyland Caverns.
The caverns are filled with offbeat dioramas depicting scenes from classic fairy tales and folklore. There are glow-in-the-dark figures of gnomes, fairies, and other mythical creatures hidden among the rocks and formations. Once you’re through the caverns, you’ll find yourself back at the Rock City entrance.

Ruby Falls
Ruby Falls is mesmerizing! It’s the tallest and deepest underground waterfall in the U.S. open to the public. The waterfall is 145 feet tall and has a red hue, hence the name Ruby Falls. To get to the falls you’ll need to descend 260 feet in a glass elevator before walking roughly half a mile through a cave system.
What to Expect at Ruby Falls
You will need to join a tour to see the Ruby Falls — you cannot get to it on your own. The Cave Walk Tour is the most popular choice, but several specialty tours are also available. The Cave Walk Tour lasts around an hour and a half.
The trail leading through the cave is relatively easy and less than a mile round trip, but it can be slippery and narrow. It’s suitable for most people though, including children. The trail is filled with stalagmites and crazy formations, and you’ll learn about the cave’s history during the walk.
Once you reach Ruby Falls, you’ll see it’s illuminated with bright colored lights that change slowly and dramatically. You’ll have about 10 minutes to take it all in and snap photos before heading back on a similar trail that leads back to the elevator.

Incline Railway
The Incline Railway, often called “America’s Most Amazing Mile,” is a unique and exciting way to experience Lookout Mountain. The railway travels up and down the mountain at a steep grade of 72.7%, making it one of the steepest passenger railways in the world.
What to Expect at the Incline Railway
The Incline Railway features two stations: the lower station in St. Elmo and the upper station on Lookout Mountain. You can start at either station, just be sure to purchase roundtrip tickets so you can return to your car. Parking is available at both the upper and lower stations, but the upper station has significantly fewer spots.
Once you arrive and park, at either station, you’ll find yourself at a ticket office. You can purchase tickets in person, but it’s recommended to buy tickets online in advance, especially during peak season. They’re sold on a timed entry basis. You’ll purchase or present your ticket for your time slot, and queue for the next ride.
Once it’s your turn, you’ll board the railcar and take a seat. The railcars are built on an 18-degree angle so you’ll be reclined in your seats at the bottom, but sitting level at the top. You’ll feel the subtle shift in angle as you ascend and descend the mountain. The journey is 1 mile long, at a speed of just under 10 miles an hour. It takes roughly 10 minutes to get from one station to the other. A railcar leaves from each station every 20 minutes.
At the upper station, there’s an observation deck with panoramic views of the Chattanooga Valley, a small museum showcasing the history of the railway, an engine room you can tour, and a fudge shop and snack bar with an attached gift shop. You’ll also find the entrance to Point Park up here.
At the lower station, you’ll find the historic St. Elmo neighborhood, known for its charming buildings and vibrant community atmosphere. You can explore souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants, and enjoy a treat at the local ice cream shop.
We recommend starting at the bottom (St. Elmo Station) if you want easier parking and the slightly more thrilling experience of ascending the railway. Park at the top (Lookout Mountain Station) if you plan on exploring historical sites like Point Park first, especially if your plan is to beat the crowds at these sites.
Tickets for the Incline Railway
