The Maldives basically has a monopoly on true underwater restaurants. Almost every restaurant in the world that is fully submerged beneath the natural ocean is located here, as part of a luxury private island resort.

That means visiting one is not as simple as making a dinner reservation. Most travelers will need to plan their stay around the experience by booking a resort with an underwater restaurant, such as Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Hurawalhi Maldives, You & Me Maldives, or Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas. Some resorts do allow outside visitors to dine at their underwater restaurants, but transportation and reservations must be coordinated in advance.

1. 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi Maldives

5.8 Undersea Restaurant sits about 19 feet (or 5.8 meters) below the ocean inside a fully submerged glass tunnel. It is the world’s largest all glass underwater restaurant, but it is still surprisingly intimate, with space for just 10 couples.

The restaurant is located at Hurawalhi Maldives, an adults only resort in the Lhaviyani Atoll. From Malé, the best way to get there is a roughly 40 minute seaplane flight arranged through the resort.

You do not have to stay at Hurawalhi to eat at 5.8. Guests staying at other Maldives resorts can request a reservation, but transportation must be arranged through the resort where they are staying. Guests at nearby Kuredu and Komandoo have their own booking options, while visitors from other resorts may have to pay an additional charge. Realistically, staying at Hurawalhi is still the easiest way to plan the experience.

2. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant was the world’s first underwater restaurant, and it is still one of the most famous. It sits about 16 feet below the ocean inside a curved glass tunnel and only seats 14 people at a time.

Ithaa is located at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in the South Ari Atoll. From Malé, the easiest way to get there is a 30 minute seaplane ride arranged through the resort.

You do not have to stay at the Conrad to eat at Ithaa, but visiting as an outside guest takes more planning. You will need to contact the resort directly so they can arrange both your reservation and transportation to the island. Realistically, staying at the Conrad is the easiest way to experience it.

3. H2O Underwater Restaurant at You & Me Maldives

H2O Underwater Restaurant sits twenty feet below the ocean inside a fully submerged glass dining room with 360 degree views. It’s known for being the first underwater restaurant in the Maldives managed by a Michelin starred chef.

H2O is located at You & Me Maldives, an adults only resort in the Raa Atoll. From Malé, the easiest way to get there is a 45 minute seaplane ride arranged through the resort. You can also fly to Ifuru and take a 20 minute speedboat from there.

You do not have to stay at You & Me Maldives to eat at H2O. Outside guests can contact the resort directly through the H2O booking form or by email to arrange a dinner reservation. Transportation will also need to be coordinated in advance, so staying at the resort is still the easiest option.

It is also home to an underwater wine cellar and currently calls itself the world’s only underwater caviar restaurant.

SEA is located at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas in the Baa Atoll. From Malé, the easiest way to get there is a roughly 35 minute seaplane ride arranged through the resort.

5. Only BLU Under Ocean Restaurant at OBLU SELECT Lobigili

Only BLU is located between OBLU SELECT Lobigili and its neighboring sister resort, OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi. Lobigili is an adults only resort, while Ailafushi is family friendly. M6m is located at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO Resort in the South Malé Atoll. From Malé, the resort is about a 45 minute speedboat ride away, making it much easier to reach than the resorts that require a seaplane.

You must stay at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO Resort to dine at M6m. Guests staying at least four nights receive one meal at the restaurant as part of the resort’s all inclusive plan. Guests staying fewer than four nights can still dine at M6m for an additional charge.

7. Subsix at Niyama Private Islands Maldives

Subsix sits about 20 feet below the ocean, but it looks completely different from the glass tunnel restaurants. It originally opened as the world’s first underwater music club, and it still hosts glow parties along with lunches, dinners, and private events.

Subsix is located at Niyama Private Islands Maldives in the Dhaalu Atoll. From Malé, the easiest way to get there is a 45 minute seaplane ride. You can also take a roughly 35 minute domestic flight followed by a 10 minute speedboat ride to the resort. Once you are there, Subsix is reached by another short speedboat ride.

True Underwater Dining NOT in the Maldives

The Maldives may have a near monopoly on true underwater restaurants, but it is not the only place where you can dine below the surface of the ocean. Norway is home to the only comparable restaurant we found outside the Maldives, and the experience could not feel more different. Instead of bright tropical water and coral reefs, Under looks out into the cold, moody North Sea.

9. Under in Lindesnes, Norway

Under is the only true underwater restaurant we found outside the Maldives. The massive concrete building looks like it is sliding into the North Sea, with the dining room sitting about 16 feet below the surface. Instead of a glass tunnel, one entire wall is made up of a huge panoramic window overlooking the seabed. Under is also the world’s largest underwater restaurant and has earned a Michelin star.

Under is located in Lindesnes at the southern tip of Norway. The closest major city is Kristiansand, which is about a 90 minute drive away. Most travelers will want to rent a car and stay overnight nearby rather than trying to visit as a quick side trip.

Under is not attached to a hotel, so anyone can make a reservation directly through the restaurant. Lunch is only offered from April through September, while dinner is served year round on select days.

Immersive Aquarium Restaurants Around the World

The rest of the restaurants on this list are not actually submerged beneath the ocean, but they still create a convincing underwater atmosphere with massive aquariums, glass tunnels, and marine life swimming right beside the tables.

In some ways, aquarium restaurants offer a more reliable experience since the water is always clear and you are almost guaranteed to see sharks, rays, and colorful fish throughout your meal. They may not be true underwater restaurants, but the best ones still make it feel like you are dining inside an underwater world.

10. Ossiano at Atlantis The Palm — Dubai

Ossiano is not actually underwater, but it comes pretty close to creating the illusion. The dining room has floor to ceiling windows looking directly into the Ambassador Lagoon, where sharks, rays, and huge schools of fish swim past the tables. It is also a Michelin starred restaurant, making this one of the most upscale aquarium dining experiences on the list.

Ossiano is located inside Atlantis The Palm on Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or rideshare, although the Palm Monorail also stops at Atlantis.

You do not have to stay at Atlantis The Palm to dine at Ossiano. Anyone can make a reservation directly through the restaurant, but booking well in advance is a good idea. It’s also worth asking for a table as close to the aquarium as possible since the view is the entire reason to go.

11. L’Olivo at Al Mahara at Burj Al Arab — Dubai

L’Olivo at Al Mahara is built around a massive tropical aquarium inside the Burj Al Arab. The tables wrap around the tank and make the entire room feel submerged. It is not as immersive as Ossiano, since you’re sitting around a tank, instead of surrounded by the tank, but it still captures the illusion.

L’Olivo is located inside the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or rideshare. You do not have to stay at the hotel to dine there, but you do need a confirmed restaurant reservation to enter the Burj Al Arab.

One important note: the Burj Al Arab is currently undergoing an approximately 18 month restoration, and both the hotel and restaurant are closed during this work. You will need to check its reopening status before adding this one to your plans.

15. La Mer in Neuwied, Germany

La Mer is built around a large freshwater aquarium that fills one side of the dining room. It is not as massive or dramatic as the aquariums in Singapore or Dubai, but it creates a similar atmosphere to the Aquarium Restaurant locations in the United States and deserves a spot on the list.

La Mer is located in Neuwied, Germany, on the grounds of a fish farm in the Niederbieber area. The easiest way to get there is by car.

Anyone can make a reservation directly through the restaurant. La Mer now serves a fixed three or four course menu, and advance reservations are recommended because the aquarium side dining room is in high demand. The outdoor terrace does not have an aquarium view, so make sure you are booking inside.

16. Coral Reef Restaurant at EPCOT — Orlando, Florida

Coral Reef Restaurant has panoramic windows looking directly into The Seas with Nemo & Friends, one of the largest man made ocean environments in the world. The habitat is home to around 2,000 sea creatures, including sharks, sea turtles, rays, and colorful fish. Every table has a view, although the tables closest to the glass are obviously the most impressive.

The restaurant is located inside EPCOT at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The easiest way to get there is by driving, rideshare, or Disney transportation from your hotel.

You will need valid EPCOT admission to dine at Coral Reef Restaurant. A dining reservation does not include park admission or guarantee entry, so you need both. Reservations are highly recommended. The restaurant is also scheduled to close temporarily for maintenance beginning September 8, 2026, with reopening expected later in the year.

17. Sharks Underwater Grill at SeaWorld — Orlando, Florida

Sharks Underwater Grill has floor to ceiling windows looking directly into SeaWorld’s shark habitat. Sharks, rays, and other fish swim past the dining room, and the tables closest to the glass get by far the best view. This one feels more like an upscale theme park restaurant than a luxury underwater experience, but eating beside a tank full of sharks is still undeniably cool.

The restaurant is located inside SeaWorld Orlando. The easiest way to get there is by driving, taxi, or rideshare.

During normal park operations, you will generally need SeaWorld admission to reach the restaurant. Same day reservations can be made at the host stand starting at 11 a.m., and larger groups can contact the restaurant directly by email. Aquarium Restaurant is a small U.S. chain built around massive aquariums filled with tropical fish, sharks, rays, and other marine life. There are currently four locations:

• Nashville, Tennessee: Located inside Opry Mills, a massive indoor shopping mall near the Grand Ole Opry. This location is known for its colorful central aquarium and mermaid shows.
• Denver, Colorado: Attached to the Downtown Aquarium, a full aquarium attraction with exhibits, rides, and a restaurant built around a 150,000 gallon tank.
• Houston, Texas: Located inside the Downtown Aquarium complex in central Houston. The restaurant surrounds a 100,000 gallon aquarium, and the property also includes aquarium exhibits and amusement rides.
• Kemah, Texas: Located at Kemah Boardwalk, a waterfront entertainment area with rides, shops, and restaurants. The aquarium dining room is paired with marine exhibits and diver shows.

  Koral offers the most immersive setup, especially if you book one of the tables beneath the aquarium tunnel. Fish swim above and beside you, making it feel closer to a true underwater restaurant than most aquarium dining rooms.

  Ossiano is the clear choice if you want the aquarium view paired with a full fine dining experience. The dark dining room and enormous windows overlooking the Ambassador Lagoon make it feel polished, dramatic, and far removed from a typical aquarium attraction.
• Best for marine life views: Ocean Restaurant
  Ocean Restaurant overlooks one of the largest aquarium habitats on this list, with manta rays, reef sharks, and huge schools of fish passing the windows. The setting is elegant, but the marine life is still the main event.

Are Underwater Restaurants Really Worth It?

Yes, underwater restaurants can absolutely be worth it, but how you plan the experience matters.

Flying all the way to a remote island in the Maldives just for one meal probably does not make sense when you can find a surprisingly similar atmosphere at an aquarium restaurant in Dubai, Bali, Orlando, or even Nashville. But if you are already planning a trip to the Maldives, choosing a resort specifically because it has an underwater restaurant can be completely worth it.

It is also important to keep your expectations realistic. The photos you see online are usually taken at the perfect time of day, with clear water, ideal lighting, and plenty of marine life passing by. Some may even be heavily edited. In real life, the water may be darker, visibility may be limited, and there is no guarantee that sharks, rays, turtles, or schools of fish will appear during your meal.

You should also think about what you actually want from the experience. Many true underwater restaurants serve expensive fine dining menus, which may not be worth it if that is not your style.
